Our Story …

We are really pleased to announce that we're taking part in Shitbox Rally 2022 Autumn!! The object of the exercise is to buy a shitbox [for the benefit of those unfamiliar with Australian vernacular, a shitbox is a crappy old car, the likes of which one would be very ill-advised to drive substantial distances across inhospitable terrain] for less than a grand [AU$1,000] and then drive it substantial distances across inhospitable terrain, between two locations in Australia. This year, all the teams are driving their shitboxes from Wollongong to Mackay.

What is the Shitbox Rally?

Shitbox Rally is the largest community-lead fundraiser for the Cancer Council in Australia and is now in its 12th year. Part of the participation is that all teams have to raise a minimum of $5,000 but most teams raise well above this amount as you can see with the 2022 Autumn rally target set at $2,500,000.

Who are we?

We're a couple of halfwits who together are less than the sum of our wits. We've known each other since 2003 when we worked at the same company specialising in cancer care and we have both forged careers in this area since.

Why are we doing this?

Because we both like cars, we both like camping, we both like a laugh and we both don't like cancer. We see the Shitbox Rally as an opportunity to do some good by raising money for cancer research and to have some fun doing it.

What do we need from you?

Money! More specifically, donations for cancer research. Rest assured, your donation is not funding our half-arsed mid-life crises, we're funding those ourselves. We're responsible for buying and setting up the car, as well as any costs incurred along the way. The car will be auctioned at the end of the trip with proceeds going to cancer research. Any donation you are able to make goes to the Cancer Council and we are extremely proud to be doing our part to support such a worthy charity. The fundraising is the hard part, so any donation you can give is greatly appreciated. For Australian tax residents, all donations over AU$2 are tax deductible. Please make sure to follow our progress via this page and the blog post below.

Here's what I'm doing …

Shitbox Rally is the adventure of a lifetime challenging participants and their cars, worth no more than $1,500, on a 7 day drive across Australia to raise money for cancer research.

The rally is not a race – it’s a fun, colourful, unpredictable adventure with participants travelling at their own pace in smaller groups. Vehicles often break down but “we never leave anyone behind” and each night is spent camping beneath the stars and celebrating the day’s achievements. It all adds up to an incredible opportunity to see Australia’s vast and beautiful countryside and make lifelong friends, many brought together after experiencing cancer themselves or seeing cancer impact family and friends.

Since it’s inception the rally has been the largest fundraiser for the Cancer Council nationally.

It's been a busy few months as we have pulled everything together for shitbox while juggling our lives, jobs, lockdowns and closed borders. We managed to find and purchase a car which we hope will get us through, a 1991 Holden Apollo manufactured by those reliable souls at Toyota and better known as a Camry. This in itself was no mean feat in the current second-hand car market. Following some amateur mechanical compliance work to get it transferred into our names (a requirement in Victoria), we are now at the stage of performing some necessary maintenance and adding a few bits and bobs as the rally draws near.

Accord Healthcare has very generously come on board as our major sponsor. At this stage, I think it's worth reiterating that 100% of Accord's sponsorship dollars and any other donations go directly to the Cancer Council. All costs associated with this misadventure, including the purchase of the car, are being covered by Dave and I personally.

great idea David - looks like fun, and for a good cause. And a subject dear to my heart - I've never bought a new car, always had shitboxes. Lots of funny stories, for example, once a police car signalled me to pull over, then a policewoman walked around and around my car and said "Where are you driving to, a rubbish dump I hope"

The Impact, Outcomes & Charity

Shitbox Rally is a dedicated fundraising event for cancer research with funds going to Cancer Council.

Cancer Council is one of the largest non-government funders of cancer research in Australia. We conduct and fund research studies across all cancers and all stages of the cancer journey.

Thanks to the community funds raised such as Shitbox Rally we can fund world-class research that reduces the impact of cancer for everyone.

$41 million over the past 13 years has been raised by Box Rallies to date, supporting ground-breaking projects such as:

 • A research study to develop a vaccine that protects against lymphoma cancers.
 • A research trial to standardise international guidelines on melanoma removal.
 • A research grant to revolutionise the treatment of pancreatic cancer.

These projects wouldn’t be possible without your support.
