Our Story …

Marty ("Chips") and Gareth ("Gravy") are really pleased and somewhat bumbazed^ to announce that we're taking part in Shitbox Rally 2022 - Autumn!! This year all the teams will be driving their shitboxes from Wollongong to Mackay. Which we now realise is actually quite far. Shitbox Rally is the largest community led fundraiser for the Cancer Council in Australia and is now in its 12th year. Part of the participation is that all teams have to raise a minimum of $5,000 - but most teams raise well above this amount as you can see with the 2022 Autumn rally target set at $2,500,000. We cover all costs, including buying the shitbox, getting the shitbox to the start line and getting us to the start line (and home). Therefore your contributions go directly to our fundraising for Cancer Council and we are extremely proud to be doing our part to support such a worthy charity.

So why are we doing this?

 1. For Fun and Adventure - with a capital F 'n’ A!
 2. Because after 22+ years we wanted to put our friendship to the test by trying to raise a load of cash together then spending 7 clueless, bone shaking, dust eating, nerve shredding days battering around the outback in a total shitbox.
 3. Having both lost our dads, Nev (a proud Welshman) and Archie (a proud Scotsman), in the last few years we decided to honour their memories by doing a good thing.

Our lack of mechanical knowledge will be matched only by our lack of outback survival skills. None of which matters when we’ll be driving one of the best playlists on the road. So in the words of Steppenwolf let’s (hopefully) get our motor runnin', head out on the highway (assuming we can find it), and look for some adventure in whatever comes our way (no doubt a face full of dirt and a whole heap of trouble). The fundraising is the hard part, so any donation you can give would be greatly appreciated. As well as donations there are also options for sponsorship. If you want your organisation or business name to take pride of place on our shitbox then let us know and we’ll give you more information about how to do that. Please, please dig deep and help us exceed our target for this great cause. And don’t forget to stay tuned for more to come in the Continuing Misadventures of Chips & Gravy.

You can follow our progress via this page and the blog post below. And make sure to watch out for news about our future fund raising events!

Actually before we can get our motor runnin’ we’re gonna need a car. So if you or anyone you know is selling a shitbox for less than $1,000 then please get in touch. No Shitbox is too shitty (as long as it has a bit of rego)

Thanks and god speed, Gareth & Marty

Here's what I'm doing …

Shitbox Rally is the adventure of a lifetime challenging participants and their cars, worth no more than $1,500, on a 7 day drive across Australia to raise money for cancer research.

The rally is not a race – it’s a fun, colourful, unpredictable adventure with participants travelling at their own pace in smaller groups. Vehicles often break down but “we never leave anyone behind” and each night is spent camping beneath the stars and celebrating the day’s achievements. It all adds up to an incredible opportunity to see Australia’s vast and beautiful countryside and make lifelong friends, many brought together after experiencing cancer themselves or seeing cancer impact family and friends.

Since it’s inception the rally has been the largest fundraiser for the Cancer Council nationally.

Has anyone got a water pump for a 1988 Mitsubishi Lancer SE?

That’s right people we bought ourselves a Shitbox! .... from Scotty in Armadale.

Ed (our apprentice mechanic buddy) had a quick look underneath, while Chips and I kicked the tyres and admired the 1980’s plush velour interior. Scotty said: “She’s mint fellas!”

At this point any thoughts of a decent test drive were cut short when Scotty informed us that “mint” didn’t extend to the water pump … on account of it being “totally cactus!”

Undeterred, amid floods of water pouring from the engine bay, and at severe risk of a catastrophic overheating event we took it for a quick spin round the block. And then the magic happened.

As soon as we felt the pull of all 75 horses driving that 1.5 litre four cylinder powerplant, the precision gear box, the non-existent power steering, and the comforting knock coming from the front suspension we just knew there and then we’d found our forever Shitbox. There’s even a little adapter to convert the cassette player to Bluetooth. Which is important.

So we checked the boot for bodies and shook Scotty’s hand at $600. Leaving us $400 for stickers... oh and a water pump!

Scotty (as we have now nicknamed our Shitbox) came back to Perth on a trailer and is now safely up on ramps in Chips’ garage where rally preparations will commence in earnest. And with that the Adventure truly begins.

Pass the Haynes repair manual…

Greetings Chips & Gravy Fans!

Good news and bad news on the road to rally readiness, with some other news in between.

Let’s start with some good news: The WA state borders are finally open and it looks like we’re going rallying! Scotty’s bags are nearly packed and he’s booked on the train to travel to Wollongong on 4 April. An excited Marty & Gareth will fly to meet him on 5 May. It’s starting to feel very real, and the pressure is now well and truly on as we push to get Scotty ready and raise as much money as we can for Cancer Council Australia.

More good news: Scotty is back on the road and humming along like a high precision machine that hums really well when you’ve had to turn the idle way up cos of a problem with the carburettor that’s too expensive to fix. Hopefully this means we’ve completed all the engine work we need to do. All thanks to discontinued water pipes being shipped from Thailand by Marty’s brother Gareth, and our sponsor Jum Proudlove and the guys at Western Forklifts putting it all back together again. Legends!

Ordinary news: It turns out Scotty needs a bit of suspension work (bump stops and shock absorber boots) and a bit more mechanical fettling here and there to give him the best chance of surviving the gruelling road to Mackay. Luckily we’ve got a couple of weekends and a few quid left in the budget to gets some bits, then it looks like Chips & Gravy will be getting the Haynes manual out again. A tap with a spanner, a turn with a hammer. What could possibly go wrong? Tune in later to find out!

Bad news: While Scotty is now moving our fundraising has stalled. As you know we had to cancel the fundraising Ceilidh due to COVID restrictions which was a big disappointment. If you haven’t donated yet – now’s the time!

Finally in better news: Before Scotty leaves for the station we intend to organise a grand unveiling of the fully pimped and primed machine. The plan is to gather somewhere for a cup of tea and a bacon roll on the morning of Saturday 2nd April. So please save the date. We’re hoping we might also be able to run the silent auction (previously planned for the Ceilidh) at the same time. Standby for more info re. venue/time.

Thank U: Thank U to all our amazing friends and family that have already made a donation. A special Thank U to our brilliant sponsors whose logos will adorn Scotty … Brealey Quilly Kenny, Fennell Tyres, Gyro Drilling, Driveshafts Australia, Western Forklifts Services & Nail Brewing.

All hail the gods of bump stops and shock absorber boots. Cheers for now.

Marty & Gareth

The Impact, Outcomes & Charity

Shitbox Rally is a dedicated fundraising event for cancer research with funds going to Cancer Council.

Cancer Council is one of the largest non-government funders of cancer research in Australia. We conduct and fund research studies across all cancers and all stages of the cancer journey.

Thanks to the community funds raised such as Shitbox Rally we can fund world-class research that reduces the impact of cancer for everyone.

$41 million over the past 13 years has been raised by Box Rallies to date, supporting ground-breaking projects such as:

 • A research study to develop a vaccine that protects against lymphoma cancers.
 • A research trial to standardise international guidelines on melanoma removal.
 • A research grant to revolutionise the treatment of pancreatic cancer.

These projects wouldn’t be possible without your support.
